Bulk Heating and Slender Magnetic Loops in the Solar Corona
نویسنده
چکیده
The heating of the solar corona and the puzzle of the slender high reaching magnetic loops seen in observations from the Transition Region And Coronal Explorer(TRACE) has been investigated through 3D numerical simulations, and found to be caused by the well observed plasma flows in the photosphere displacing the footpoints of magnetic loops in a nearly potential configuration. It is found that even the small convective displacements cause magnetic dissipation sufficient to heat the corona to temperatures of the order of a million Kelvin. The heating is intermittent in both space and time—at any one height and time it spans several orders of magnitude, and localized heating causes transonic flows along field lines, which explains the observed non-hydrostatic equilibrium of loops that are bright in emission measure. Although, the hot solar corona was discovered more than sixty years ago, however, the exact dissipation mechanism that heats the corona is still unknown. Resonant absorption and damping of Alfven waves appear to be one of the major candidates in this respect. The corona is highly structured and inhomogeneous medium, containing a large number of discrete magnetic loops. In this paper a cylindr...
متن کاملHeating the solar corona by plasma loops
We investigate the heating of the corona via plasma loops. It is shown that it may be possible to maintain the high corona temperatures using plasma loops as conduits. Under certain conditions heat can flow across magnetic fields up temperature gradients, a mechanism that has been previously applied to the heating of plasma loops. A typical conduit loop is hotter than the ambient plasma in the ...

Data from recent numerical simulations of the solar corona and transition region are analysed and the magnetic field connection between the low corona and the photosphere is found to be close to that of a potential field. The fieldline to fieldline displacements follow a power law distribution with typical displacements of just a few Mm. Three loops visible in emulated Transition Region And Cor...
متن کاملAn Energy Release Mechanism of Current Loops in the Solar Atmosphere : Solar Flares and Corona Heating
A mechanism is proposed to account for the energy release by a bipolar current loop in the solar atmosphere. This mechanism is electromagnetic in nature and utilizes the non-zero J X B forces. No dissipation of the magnetic energy by resistivity, magnetic reconnection, or circuit interruption is required. From the observed fact that bipolar current loops do exist in quasi-equilibrium in the sol...
متن کاملOn a source of Alfvén waves heating the solar corona
Studies of the origin of coronal heating and acceleration of the solar wind invoke high-frequency Alfvén waves. Here we suggest a source for such waves associated with twisted magnetic loops emerging on the solar surface and reconnecting with the open field. We identify the loops with the ephemeral regions (small-scale bipoles) observed by ground-based instruments and by SOHO. To characterize t...
